Data Deletion
Last updated: 2026-04-29 | Version 1.0
You can ask us to delete your ContriKaro account and personal data at any time. This page describes how. The two paths below produce the same result; choose whichever is convenient.
1. In-App Deletion (Recommended)
The fastest way is from inside the app:
- Open ContriKaro on your device.
- Go to Settings → About → Delete Account.
- Confirm by entering the OTP sent to your registered phone number.
Once confirmed, deletion takes effect immediately and is permanent. Your name, email, phone number, profile picture, and other personally identifying fields are overwritten with placeholder values; your authentication tokens are revoked; and you are removed from all groups. We do not have a grace window or a recovery mechanism — please be sure before you confirm.
2. Deletion by Email
If you cannot access the app (lost device, locked out of your phone number, or you uninstalled before deleting), email us at contriwisely@gmail.com with:
- The phone number associated with your ContriKaro account.
- The email address associated with the account, if any.
- A short note confirming you want your account and data deleted.
We will reply with a verification step (typically a one-time code sent to your registered phone or email) so we can confirm the request is from you. After successful verification, the deletion described above takes effect immediately and is permanent.
We aim to verify and complete email-based deletion requests within 7 days of receipt, well inside the timeframes required by India's DPDP Act 2023.
3. What Gets Deleted
When deletion completes, the following are permanently removed from our active production systems:
- Your account profile (phone number, email, name, profile picture).
- Your personal expense entries, balances, and any attachments you uploaded.
- Push notification tokens and device identifiers tied to you.
- Authentication tokens and active sessions.
- Your membership in groups. Groups in which you were the only member are deleted entirely; groups with other members continue to exist for them.
4. What Can Stay (and Why)
Some traces of your activity may remain after deletion in limited, minimised forms:
- Shared expenses in groups with others. Expenses you entered into a multi-person group are still part of that group's history (other members rely on them to settle). Your name is replaced with a generic placeholder so the historical balance remains correct without identifying you.
- Backups. Encrypted backup snapshots roll out of our system within 60 days after the active deletion completes. Backups are not used for any purpose other than disaster recovery and access to them is restricted.
- Records required by law. If law requires us to retain a specific record (for example, basic transaction logs once paid features ship, or records subject to a legal hold), we keep the minimum required, in restricted-access cold storage, for the period the law requires — and only that.
- Anonymous, aggregated analytics. Counts and aggregates that cannot be re-associated with you (for example, “total expenses created last week”) may continue to exist after deletion.
5. Before You Confirm
Deletion is permanent. We do not have a grace window or a recovery mechanism — once you confirm in the app or after we verify an email request, your personal information is anonymized immediately and cannot be restored, even if you ask. Before you confirm, please make sure:
- You have saved anywhere you want to keep your expense data.
- No group depends on you to settle an outstanding balance.
- You have re-read sections 3 and 4 above so you understand what gets deleted and what may remain.
You can sign back up later under the same phone number, but you will start with a fresh account; previous expenses and groups will not be reconnected.
